Sunnova Energy taps new fintech platform for collaboration

Houston-based Sunnova Energy International, a provider of commercial and residential solar energy services, has teamed up with fintech platform Tenet Energy to help Americans buy electric vehicles and solar power systems.

The two companies will offer special discounts and financing plans to encourage Sunnova customers to switch to electric vehicles purchased through Tenet and Tenet customers to adopt Sunnova’s solar energy systems.

“Our suite of energy solutions — which includes EV chargers — addresses the concerns of higher electricity costs associated with fueling EVs while enabling buyers the convenience of charging from home as they electrify their transportation,” Michael Grasso, executive vice president and chief revenue officer at Sunnova, says in a news release.

The goal of the partnership is to enable homeowners to charge electric vehicles with solar power, which the companies say would lower utility and fuel costs.

“Our mission is to help Americans electrify their lives, starting with their vehicle,” says Alex Liegl, CEO of New York City-based Tenet. “EVs are an excellent way to begin your sustainability journey and save money, but they are also part of a broader energy system that works synergistically with other clean energy home assets like solar.”

Needs improvement: Texas finishes low on list of EV charging stations despite increased efforts in Houston

A SmartAsset study looked at the closest EV charging stations equivalent to a trip to the gas station — factoring in each state's population. California, with its 14,500 charging stations, has five times the EV charging stations as New York (3,327), Florida (2,913) and Texas (2,472). While California ranked No. 1 on the list, Texas found itself at No. 41.

The report used EV charger and station data for each state from the U.S. Department of Energy for 2022 and 2021. Population data is for 2022 and comes from the U.S. Census Bureau 1-Year American Community Survey. Cities were also ranked by the number of fast chargers per capita. In 2022, Texas had 1,386 fast DC chargers, 2,472 EV charging stations, and a fast charger growth year over year 53.5 percent. Read more.

Incoming: Houston recycling company names new CEO

David Hudson has been named CEO of Elemental Recycling. The company, founded in 2019, is an investment of Freestone, a portfolio company of Tailwater Capital. He succeeds Tom Samuels, former CEO and board chair of the company.

"With over two decades of proven expertise in driving strategic growth and profitability across the recycling, waste management, sustainability, and decarbonization sectors, David brings a wealth of experience that makes him the ideal leader to take the reins and guide Elemental into its next phase of innovation and growth," Samuels says in a news release. The Clean Hydrogen Buyers Alliance has proposed an index aimed at bringing transparency to pricing in the emerging hydrogen market. The Houston-based alliance said the Gulf Coast Hydrogen Index, based on real-time data, would provide more clarity to pricing in the global market for hydrogen. The benchmarking effort is being designed to benefit clean hydrogen buyers, sellers and investors. The index would help position the U.S. “as the trading anchor for hydrogen’s next chapter as a globally traded commodity,” the alliance said. Continue reading.

4. Houston clean energy company to develop hybrid renewable project in Port Arthur

Houston-based clean energy company Diligence Offshore Services has announced a strategic partnership with Florida-based floating solar manufacturing company AccuSolar for the development of a renewable energy project in the Port Arthur area. Known as the Pleasure Island Power Collective, it will be built on 2,275 acres across Pleasure Island and Sabine Lake. Port Houston’s initiatives to reduce emissions have shown some positive results, according to new data from the Port of Houston Authority. Eclipse Energy, previously known as Gold H2, is a climatetech startup converting end-of-life oil fields into low-cost, sustainable hydrogen sources. The company completed its first field trial this summer, which demonstrated subsurface bio-stimulated hydrogen production. Eclipse Energy says Its technology could yield up to 250 billion kilograms of low-carbon hydrogen.

Rheom Materials

Rheom Materials is a next-generation startup developing biobased materials for a more sustainable future. Its two flagship offerings are Shorai, a sustainable leather alternative that is usable for apparel, accessories, car interiors, and more, and Benree, an alternative to plastic without the carbon footprint.

Solidec

Solidec is a chemical manufacturing company developing autonomous generators that extract molecules from water and air and convert them into pure chemicals and fuels that are free of carbon emissions. The technology eliminates the need for transport, storage, and permitting.
