Houston unicorn startup named North American Company of the Year by cleantech firm

Houston-based geothermal energy startup Fervo Energy has been named North American Company of the Year by research and consulting firm Cleantech Group.

Fervo appears on this year’s Global Cleantech 100, Cleantech Group’s annual list of the world’s most innovative and promising cleantech companies

Houston companies Syzygy Plasmonics and Vaulted Deep also made the Global Cleantech 100 list this year.

“These innovators give us reasons to be optimistic about the future. Their groundbreaking work demonstrates that progress toward net zero remains possible and inspires us to double down on the challenge of addressing climate change,” says Richard Youngman, CEO of Cleantech Group.

Fervo was honored during a Jan. 27 awards dinner at Cleantech Forum North America, an event hosted by Cleantech Group. Co-founder and CEO Tim Latimer accepted the North American Company of the Year award on behalf of Fervo.

“We have always been honored to be part of the Global Cleantech 100,” Latimer says in a LinkedIn post. “Being recognized for the fourth consecutive year and named the ‘North American Company of the Year’ is a testament to our relentless pursuit of innovation in the energy sector. The demand for clean, firm power has never been more urgent, and we are proud to lead the way.”

Founded in 2017, Fervo is now a unicorn, meaning its valuation as a private company has surpassed $1 billion. The startup’s valuation is estimated at $1.4 billion. According to PitchBook data, the company raised $634 million in VC funding in Q4. Read more here.

New global report names top cleantech startups to keep an eye on

Nine Greentown Labs members were recognized on a global list honoring cleantech companies.

Houston-based Fervo Energy was named to Cleantech Group’s Global Cleantech 100 report. Cleantech Group is a research-driven company that aids the public sector, private sector, investors, and also identifies, assesses, and engages with the innovative solutions around climate challenges.

Fervo, a geothermal energy company that specializes in a renewable energy technology that uses hot water to produce electricity, debuted in 2022 on the list, and was honored in the “Energy & Power” category for the second straight year.

The other Greentown Labs, which is dual located in Houston and Somerville, Massachusetts, companies recognized on the list include:

Amogy, a New York-based novel carbon-free energy system using ammonia as a renewable fuel
Carbon Upcycling Technologies, a Canadian waste and carbon utilization company
Dandelion Energy, New York-based company offering ground source heat pumps for most homes
Energy Dome, a Milan-based company addressing the problem of long-duration energy storage
e-Zinc, a Canadian company with a breakthrough electrochemical technology for energy storage
Nth Cycle, a Massachusetts company with sustainable metal refining
Raptor Maps, a Massachusetts company with a software platform for solar assets' performance data management
Sublime Systems, a Massachusetts companydeveloping a breakthrough process for low-carbon cement
WeaveGrid, a California company working with utilities, automakers, EVSEs, and EV owners to enable and accelerate the electrification of transportation

The number of nominations from the public, a panel, i3, awards and Cleantech Group totaled 25,435 from over 65 countries, which is a 61% increase from the 2023 nomination process. Winners were chosen from a short list of 330 companies by a panel of over 80 industry experts.

While not on the list, Beaumont-based Fortress Energy was mentioned for its electrolyzer supply agreement with Cleantech Group 100 winner Electric Hydrogen.

The Cleantech Group 100 was started 15 years ago.

“In 15 more years, we will be at 2039—by which time, a mere decade out from the ‘net-zero’ target of 2050,” Cleantech Group CEO Richard Youngman says in the report. “I would expect the composition of our annual list to have markedly changed again, and the leading upcoming private companies of that time to reflect such.”

2 Houston energy execs among Fortune’s most powerful people in business

Two Houston-area energy executives have been named to Fortune’s list of the 100 Most Powerful People in Business.

Darren Woods, chairman and CEO of ExxonMobil Corp., appears at No. 34 on the list, and Mike Wirth, chairman and CEO of Chevron Corp., lands at No. 90. Woods showed up on last year’s inaugural list, while Wirth debuted on the list this year.

Woods assumed the top job at Spring-based ExxonMobil in 2017.

“Woods worked his way up through the ranks of the oil giant, first serving as a planning analyst in 1992, and later as vice president and senior vice president,” according to Fortune.

Under Woods’ watch, ExxonMobil has grown substantially. For instance, the company wrapped up its nearly $60 billion acquisition of Dallas-based oil and gas exploration and production company Pioneer Natural Resources in 2024.

Last year, ExxonMobil posted revenue of nearly $350 billion. The company relocated its headquarters to Spring from the Dallas-Fort Worth suburb of Irving in 2023.

Wirth became chairman and CEO of Houston-based Chevron in 2018.

“While Chevron continues to grow its oil and gas business from West Texas to Kazakhstan, the company is investing more in hydrogen, renewable fuels and sustainable aviation fuel, carbon capture, and, most recently, lithium extraction,” according to Fortune.

In terms of revenue, Chevron is the country’s second-largest oil and gas company, behind ExxonMobil. Last year, Chevron posted revenue of almost $202.8 billion.

With Wirth at the helm, Chevron has expanded its footprint. In July, for example, the company completed its $53 billion acquisition of New York City-based energy company Hess Corp. The deal, announced in October 2023, was delayed by a now-resolved legal battle against ExxonMobil and China National Offshore Oil Corp. over Hess’ plentiful oil assets in Guyana.

In 2024, Chevron announced it was moving its headquarters to Houston from Northern California.

Jensen Huang, president and CEO of Nvidia, claimed the No. 1 spot. The technology company announced plans to produce AI supercomputers at a Houston-area factory earlier this year.

TALKE USA Inc., a Houston-area arm of German logistics company TALKE, broke ground on its new Recycling Support Center in Mont Belvieu August 1. The facility will process post-consumer plastic materials, which will then be further processed at Cyclyx's new Houston-based Circularity Center, a first-of-its-kind plastic waste sorting and processing facility that was developed through a joint venture between Cyclix, ExxonMobil and LyondellBasell.
