The U.S. Department of Energy (DOE) has chosen nine participants for the new Regional Energy Democracy Initiative (REDI), a consortium that will help guide clean energy projects in Texas and Louisiana.

“REDI’s pilot program will help ensure that communities in Texas and Louisiana — states that are poised to receive over $8 billion for carbon reduction and clean energy infrastructure projects — have the resources they need to help steer the historic clean energy investments in their backyards,” Jennifer Granholm, U.S. Energy Secretary, said in a statement.

The nine inaugural members of REDI are:

• Air Alliance Houston, the Digital Workforce Academy, Micah Six Eight Mission, and the Power Coalition for Equity and Justice. These groups will provide technical assistance to regional and local nonprofits, conduct stakeholder engagement activities and provide information to local partners.
• The Texas Climate Jobs Project will serve as REDI's workforce development organization. It will also provide information about labor issues in the clean energy sector.
• The Gulf States Renewable Industries Association and the Louisiana Chamber of Commerce Foundation will serve as REDI’s economic development entity.
• Southern University and Agricultural & Mechanical College will lead REDI by facilitating consortium activities and developing a regional benefits strategy with input from other members.
• The Integrated Minority Aids Network will offer legal support.

The DOE says REDI “represents a significant step towards a more resilient energy future for Texas and Louisiana. By fostering collaboration between communities and fostering collaboration between stakeholders, REDI aims to ensure that the benefits of energy projects are shared by all Americans.”
